Hi, I'm Clara Tangen. Born and raised in Perham, Minnesota, I came to Duluth to study English and Environment, Sustainability, and Geography! I enjoy Minnesota's outdoors, especially when it comes to hiking and kayaking, and am passionate about protecting the environment. I am a huge Spotify fan and am always down to discuss the next best documentary or movie!
Why would you be a good leader of your Freshman class? You may include any leadership advocacy type of experience you have done.
I would be a good Freshman leader because I can use my previous leadership experience to focus on ways to enact positive change, and I'm not afraid to collaborate to strengthen the school and community. Some of my prior experience in leadership includes Cabinet Leader and Announcer of Student Interact (student-led volunteering), Senior High Leader of Student Council, and an ADA Council Initiator and Leader. I have volunteered many times within my community, been active in multiple activities, and hope to be involved in UMD as much as possible!
What ideas do you believe you could bring to the table in Student Government Association? How would you pursue these changes?
- Repurpose the outdoor area off the right side of the DC: Commission on-campus clubs, classes, or activities to modify area, cultural display, mural, weeding, seating, etc.
- Advertise more study spots on campus, including outdoor locations and areas in other buildings to encourage expanded student studying: Advertise via social media, temporary signage, etc.
- Promote more student-involvement on-campus and off-campus (Tweed, Planetarium, Sports Games, Clubs, etc.): Advertise via social media, signage, emails
- Update outdoor informative signs (water gardens, duck pond, etc.): possibly involve fundraising or donations, collaborate with community
- Weekly or Monthly highlights of on-campus resources (Library, Annex, Tutoring, Writers Workshop, Counseling, Student Stores, Dining, Champ's Closet, Champ's Cupboard, etc.): various social media platforms, emails, event in that area at the time of promotion
